An opening class act

I ended up at a Baywood show on Friday at Larimer Lounge - Baywood was amazing, as expected (check out ‘I Can Breathe Again’ for some sing-along-clap-along). The surprise, however, came from one of the opening bands out of Boulder who call themselves The Yawpers. The lead singer/guitarist rocking cowboy boots was an all-out entertainer with great talent. I picked up a copy of their new EP and thought I’d stream it here for ya’ll to hop on board the Yawp-train.

The best things in life aren’t things.

Micheal Franti - I’ll Be Waiting

This song is off his highly recommended album that drops next Tuesday called ‘The Sound of Sunshine’. I went to a concert of his earlier this year where he played a lot of stuff off this album (the rain helped create a lasting memory).

Update: You can stream the entire album during the week of 9/20/2010 over at Spinner: http://www.spinner.com/new-releases#/5

Asher Roth - Fallin’

You might have heard of this guy singing about pizza & booze in “I love college”…this has a little more mellow feel…

Lyrics after the bump…

Jónsi

Last night I went to the sold-out Jónsi (from sigur rós) in Lawrence. The ambient sound was incredible. All 4 musicians shuffled instruments throughout the set, although the drummer was mostly consistent - this man knew how to beat a drum.

Review from Back to Rockville blog:

The performance culminated with “Grow Till Tall” and the most powerful emotional moment I’ve experienced at a concert.
….
Like a roller coaster car inching its way to the top of a hill, the music kept ratcheting in intensity, building past any release point until it became a dense sheet of white noise, and even then it continued to swell. It seemed the only thing that kept the audience from being engulfed by the sound and the building from being torn apart was the fragile magnificence of Jonsi’s voice that penetrated the noise.

I present to you…Grow Till Tall (best heard at 150 decibels, possibly curled up like an infant on the floor — as Tommy Lee likes it):

Just came across this…fresh off the tracks. If you live around Imperial, NE you might recognize it.

woke up this morning in a familiar place and my head din’t hurt at all
didn’t have to stain the porcelain with the remnants of last night’s last call
still feel kind of empty but today the cavern feels comparatively small
the warmth of the sunshine meets my morning face today I walk instead of crawl

the pieces of dreamers are spread all over this town
like cartoons on bar stools, we draw ourselves to the ground
theres reasons for leaving that we’ve all figured out
but it’s easier to drown

later on in the afternoon in a familiar room where the sun never shines at all
in front of me i’ve got another drink, a little time to think
Billy’s behind the bar; catch my reflection in the bar back mirror
expression so sincere as it says ‘where do you go from here?’
I don’t know what the answer is, but I can tell you this: it never gets that far

Chris Larson of Heart Start Hero

Marvelous 3 - Freak of the Week….remember this song? Related news: Butch Walker (frontman) releases his 7th solo album this week, on full stream at spinner.com for a limited time.

Freak of the Week wasn’t your style? It was probably “Over Your Head” then.

Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man

Digging these guys lately - remind me of a mix between Avett Brothers & Frightened Rabbit (who comes out with a new album in March).
