I’ve updated the extension to add support for Firefox 3.0 RC1. I haven’t been able to really test it like I wanted to, so please let me know if you run into any problems and I will address them.

You might have also noticed a few extra comments on posts…using the RSSMeme API I am now able to pull in Google Reader Notes on every post that has them. They will show up at the bottom of the gReader Comments inline page inside Reader. At the top you can also see the share count & how many notes are tied to that particular post (thanks again to RSSMeme).

I submitted gReader Comments to Digg…if you find this extension useful please digg it below:

I put together a page that displays all the features of the Firefox extension (and now bookmarklets) I’ve been working on. Big release: 4.0 - now that I’ve got most of the features I want in it maybe I’ll get those taxes done next weekend.

Check it out:

The Google Reader comments add-on for Firefox I created has been updated to use the Disqus commenting system instead of IntenseDebate. The old version will still work, but the Disqus & IntenseDebate versions will not talk to each other: so any comments that are made will not be seen by all users. I encourage everyone to update to the new version.

I’ve updated the extension to fix all the bugs I could find. On the initial release [link] there were a few entries that would show up funny, but they should all work now.

If you are a developer (or just want to help), please review the extension on the official Firefox Add-ons page to get the extension out of the “Sandbox”.

If you want to look at screenshots you can look at this page.

Digg!

This is a Greasemonkey script-turned-extension that adds the IntenseDebate comment system to every entry in Google Reader. The comments are stored by the URL of the entry so you will be able to see the comments made by others with this extension that are reading the same feeds as you.

NOTE: In order to have Firefox automatically update the extension when new versions come out you will need to go to the Firefox Sandbox page and install it from there. While you are there I encourage you to submit a quick review so that it may one day make it out of Sandbox…thanks!

If you click ‘Install Add-on’ and nothing happens…

To unblock installation of Firefox Add-on

1a. Click ‘Edit Options…’ in the bar at the top of the page. View screenshot
The Firefox ‘Allowed Sites’ window will appear.
1b. Click ‘Allow’ to add Sixteen Seven to the list of allowed sites, then click ‘Close’.
1c. You will need to click ‘Agree and Install’ a second time to begin installation.

…or you may want the Greasemonkey Extension.

You may also want this feed that contains ALL comments (every comment for every
entry, not just the ones that you have):

Digg!

Google has been in the news lately regarding building/buying a social network. Much of the talks started because Microsoft is buying 5% of Facebook [Microsoft + Facebook = Trouble for Google]. Google is not in trouble - Google has the opportunity to build a useful social platform with the resources they already have: Google Reader, Shared Stuff, and Google News.

There has been quite a bit of discussion around Google Reader to allow for comments in shared items. I am all for these comments. Me & my friends share interesting news on a daily basis, but then have to hope we are both online to chat in GTalk in order to discuss anything about that shared item.

My proposal:

Add comments to the bottom of every post. Allow anybody using reader to post/read comments. There is where the social aspect comes into play: comments from every Reader user on their shared posts - a possible Digg killer? Not likely, but close. Add the functionality from the newly released Shared Stuff that would let you share more than just the links that come through your feed reader and you’re golden.

Social Networks are damn near required to have some sort of “friend list” these days, so I wouldn’t mind Google Reader to have something similar implemented. This list would simply show me my friends shared items, and much like Digg shows items that Friends dugg - GOOG could also show me on my main page what friends shared. I would also like my friends comments on shared items to stand out from the rest of the crowd - maybe a light grey background on their posts or something. It would be beautiful.
